CALL FOR PAPERS

Southeast Asia: State vs Market vs Society

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the upcoming conference titled "Southeast Asia: State vs Market vs Society." The conference aims to explore the intricate dynamics between the state, market, and society in the context of Southeast Asia.

Background: Southeast Asia, with its diverse cultures, economies, and political landscapes, presents a fascinating terrain for examining the interactions between the state, market forces, and societal structures. This region has witnessed significant transformations over the years, shaping its political, economic, and social landscapes. From state-led development models to the rise of market-oriented policies, and the evolving role of civil society, Southeast Asia offers rich ground for interdisciplinary inquiries.

Conference Themes

We invite submissions that critically engage with the following themes, but are not limited to:

  1. State Interventions and Market Forces: Examining the role of the state in shaping economic policies, regulation, and market dynamics.
  2. Marketization and Socioeconomic Transformations: Exploring the impacts of market-oriented reforms on livelihoods, inequality, and social welfare.
  3. Civil Society and Grassroots Movements: Analyzing the role of civil society organizations, social movements, and grassroots initiatives in advocating for change and challenging dominant narratives.
  4. Governance and Political Dynamics: Investigating the interplay between state power, governance structures, and political processes in Southeast Asian countries.
  5. Cultural Dynamics and Identity Politics: Understanding how cultural identities, ethnicity, and religion intersect with state and market dynamics in shaping societal norms and practices.

PUBLICATION

The Wenzao ICSEAS organizer will form a Wenzao ICSEAS Publication Evaluation Committee to selectively invite quality paper presenters to revise their conference papers after the conference and to join the upcoming edited book volume publication effort for June 2019. See publication example from 2017 ICSEAS edited book-Southeast Asia: Beyond Borders and Boundaries (publication by June 2018). If you plan to publish with us, please follow the format: Asian Survey citation/recommendation.

Please note that due to the volume of papers presented every year, only selected papers can be included in the edited book volume (maximum 10 chapters). Conference papers that are not included in the edited volume are encouraged to submit to other call for papers in journals elsewhere or "Languages and International Studies" published by Wenzao (we might consider a Languages and International Studies 2019 June special issue if enough quality papers are accepted by external review).

Wenzao ICSEAS Papers Submission and Acceptance for Publication

  1. Wenzao ICSEAS only accepts papers submitted in full text to be included in the conference agenda and (oral) presentation.
  2. All the presented papers at the Conference are reviewed by the Conference Committee which consists of senior members of Wenzao faculty. The presentation of the author and comments by audience are videotaped, and are uploaded onto the ICSEAS official website. After which the authors can revise their papers accordingly. This stage is regarded as the first round of peer review.
  3. The Editorial Committee which consists of at least 3 senior academics in the University will review all presented papers, selects about 8 to 9 papers, and invites the authors to re-submit revised papers for inclusion in the journal/publication. Authors can choose to accept or reject the invitation.
  4. If the author accepts our invitation, he or she must submit the revised full text by certain deadline. The Editorial Committee will review the full text again and offer suggestions for content revision and language editing. This is the second round of peer review. If the author accepts and re-submits the full text after revision, it will be considered for publication.
